My Piece On Domestic Violence

I definitely feel that domestic violence is getting it's share of the limelight now that the Chris Brown Rihanna situation happened, and the incident itself is very unfortunate, but the attention that the event is getting is great. Let's face it, Rihanna has the means to get away from Chris Brown and survive on her own, but what about those women who can never seem to ecape from their abusive boyfriends? I think the focus and media frenzy this incident is attracting will inspire some women to seek guidance and hopefully influence the men to take a second look at themselves.

However, this is a double edged sword because there are people who find it funny or agree with what Chris Brown did because of the rumors that were swirling around. People are using "Chris Brown" as another word for beatdown like, "I'm about to go Chris Brown on you". Similar to the Ike and Tina Turner jokes that everybody has, admit it who hasn't said "Eat the cake AnnieMae"?

I mean people are going to joke about it... its their right, as long as they're sure that their jokes aren't being misconstrued as "it's ok to do" to the younger population. I've recently seen the movie The Family That Preys, by Tyler Perry. In a particular scene towards the end Rockmond Dunbar slaps Sanaa Lathan's character over the counter in a diner. Women in the theater cheered and clapped because Sanaa Lathan was the villain, but even still he was her husband and it was a pretty vicious slap that wasn't necessary because she didn't lay a finger on him. To get cheers for that and jokes about Chris Brown and Rihanna, I'm definitely not a stick in the mud, I just pray we're not sending the wrong message by trivializing the struggles that some people actually go through everyday.

That's my piece. Hope you enjoy.
